Recently, Go Compliance and the Global Quality Assurance Association (GQAA) collaborated to host a seminar on ensuring quality of education and safety in Basic schools. Our Director delivered a compelling presentation on the significance of implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) in basic schools. The session was insightful, focusing on how TQM can transform the education sector and enhance the overall teaching and learning experience for students, teachers, school administrators and other staff(drivers, housekeeping, catering etc)
TQM emphasizes continuous improvement, customer (student) satisfaction, and involvement of all stakeholders to ensure the highest level of quality in every aspect of a school. In the context of education, TQM ensures that every process cleaning, housekeeping, teaching, administration, and student engagement is done with a focus on quality at every level. In essence TQM is a holistic approach to assuring quality.
The Director began by outlining TQM could be applied to basic schools. By first of all focusing on the Learner. The learner is the focus in the educational process. All efforts in the school should aim at improving student outcomes, both academically and personally.
Secondly, continuous Improvement. Schools should adopt a culture where there is always room for improvement. This means evaluating teaching methods, assessment systems, and even school infrastructure regularly to find areas where better results can be achieved.
Another way was through the involvement of all stakeholders. Effective TQM involves not just school administrators but also teachers, other helping staff, students, parents, and the broader community. Each of these groups plays a vital role in ensuring the success of the school.
Lastly, data-driven decision making. Using reliable data to guide decisions is essential in TQM. Schools must track student performance, attendance, and teacher effectiveness, among other monitoring and evaluation items in order to inform strategies for improvement.
The Director emphasized that the implementation of TQM in basic schools leads to several significant benefits:
Enhanced Student Performance. By prioritizing the needs of the learner and striving for continuous improvement, schools can help students achieve higher academic outcomes. This goes beyond just exam scores, it encourages holistic development by addressing both academic and non-academic needs. This inturn prepares them well for the next stages of their furthers studies.
Improved Teacher Performance. TQM encourages continuous professional development for teachers. As part of this system, teachers are not just evaluated, but also provided with the tools, training, and feedback they need to improve their teaching methods. A focus on quality empowers educators to teach more effectively and confidently.
Increased Stakeholder Satisfaction. Involving stakeholders such as parents, industry and the community ensures that the school is more in tune with the needs of its environment. Satisfied parents are more likely to participate actively in their children’s education, while engaged communities provide the necessary support systems for school growth.
Efficient Use of Resources. By focusing on quality, schools can maximize the use of available resources. Whether it’s the proper management of financial resources, time, or human capital, TQM ensures that schools operate efficiently, cutting down on wastage and redundancies and the othe wastes in quality.
The Director did not shy away from discussing the potential challenges in implementing TQM in basic schools. Resistance to change is a common issue, as stakeholders may be comfortable with existing systems, even if they are not effective. In addition, resource limitations can make it difficult for schools to invest in the necessary tools and training for quality improvement.
However, the Director provided practical solutions to overcome these challenges. Encouraging a mindset shift is key, where school leaders should focus on building a culture of continuous improvement. Starting with small, manageable changes and gradually implementing more significant reforms can also help in easing the transition to a TQM model. Moreover, schools can explore partnerships with external organizations for technical assistance, capacity building, and resource mobilization.
The Director’s presentation underscored the importance of Total Quality Management in shaping the future of basic education. By adopting TQM principles, schools can create a more engaging and effective learning environment, empowering both students and teachers to reach their full potential. The session concluded with a call to action for school administrators, teachers, and the education community to embrace the path of continuous improvement for a brighter future. Without TQM, schools will be left behind while those who have embraced it progress and grow sustainably.
