THE 14th AFRICAN NETWORK FOR INTERNATIONALISATION OF EDUCATION CONFERENCE ANIE ACCRA GHANA 9th to 11th OCTOBER 2024
The 14th African Network for Internationalization Education (ANIE) Conference 2024 in partnership with Obreal Global, University of Cape Coast, Laweh Open University College & All Africa Students’ Union (AASU) started well and ended on a high note. ANIE is really walking the talk of breaking silos & building bridges as part of fulfilling SDG17: Partnerships for goals. Having students representatives was one of the best things that the African Network for Internationalisation of Education (ANIE) did. Dr Makuku indicated that students are indeed a key stakeholder at the centre of everything. Therefore, they should be part of the decision-making process and not passive recipients of the same. She also made mention of how International Accreditation gives a lot of credibility and helps attract more international students. At some stage she posed a question on pedagogy, “The pedagogy of institutions, is it learner or teacher centered? The learner centered approach shouldn’t be undermined.” She later explained that, “When we speak about resource mobilization for internationalization it doesn’t have to be all about money”
This event kicked off with 5 pre-conference workshops, Dr Makuku joined the one entitled; The Gateway to South Africa – Co-creating Models for Strengthening the Pan African University Partnership. The GLOBAL QUALITY ASSURANCE ASSOCIATION (GQAA) was actively involved in the deliberations where a number of issues were discussed. These included but were not limited to;
i) equal partnerships
ii) identity maintenance in partnerships
iii) resource mobilization
iv) breaking the silos & building bridges for intra Africa & multilateral partnerships
v) exploring new, diverse & unique partnership focus areas
Institutional partnerships can take different forms & may focus on numerous aspects, which include but are not limited to:
i) curricula development
ii) research
iii) staff & student exchanges
iv) offering joint programmes
I liked the fact that we are now having more INTRA-AFRICA PARTNERSHIPS. I was really excited about that. We are hosting 10 South African Universities, Kenya & Ghana, among others which have meaningful INTRA-AFRICA Higher Education partnerships. They share ideas, initiatives, resources including lecturers, pieces of equipment, etc. Some of the institutions which attended the event were Mangosuthu University of Technology, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria University of Limpopo, Durban University of Technology University of KwaZulu-Natal Walter Sisulu University, among others. In Ghana there is Accra Technical University, University of Ghana, University for Professional Studies, Cape Coast Technical University, etc. Rwanda was represented by the University of Kigali while Uganda was represented by Gulu University and Uganda Management Institute. South Sudan was represented by the University of Juba and the Upper Nile University. Some of the universities which came from Kenya were Open University of Kenya, Kenyatta Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Moi University and a lot of other partner universities from Sweden, Netherlands, United States of America, France and Germany.
We need more intra-Africa engagements in all sectors. That is one of the ways through which we can move forward as a continent. The high dependence syndrome will not help us. If anything, it leads to high magnitudes of exploitation.Thank you Dr James Jowi & team for bringing us together for this rich (African Network for Internationalisation of Education (ANIE) event. Thanks to all delegates who came from different countries & to all of us who are based in Ghana, for the good workmanship. At the GLOBAL QUALITY ASSURANCE ASSOCIATION we are in full support of the work that ANIE is doing.
In summary, it was a highly interactive, educative, information, knowledge & skills sharing platform with a lot of networking for partnerships. A lot of take homes & feasible action plans were also noted and recorded. Colleagues, we are all back home in one piece and it is time for IMPLEMENTATION!!!! ACTION!!! ACTION!!!! MORE ACTION until we achieve the intended goals and outcomes!!!!
We cannot be moving from one event to another without impact through transformation. Let it not end with the writing and submission of reports to the powers that be. We can do much more, starting individually with mindset & attitudinal changes, moving on with good contagious behaviours in our implementing teams so that we become part and parcel of the transformation that we want to see in our institutions, nations & the continent at large. I wish you well!!!!
