Once AI is doing everything for students, nobody can stop it but to find new effective assessment methods that help to ensure that they still acquire the right competencies with appropriate outcomes. Instead of wasting time fighting them & detecting AI use in their work, we need to move further into some more productive things that we can do with both AI and the students using it. We shouldn’t fight AI or students who use it because we will not win that war.
If anything, personnel in academic institutions should and need to join the bandwagon and learn a lot more about AI and its application to perform their task easier and more efficiently. This creates more quality time for research, resting, etc. At the Global Quality Assurance Association we always focus, advise and contribute towards SDG4:Quality Education, among other things.
When smartphones came, lecturers and institutional leaders fought students and prevented them from bringing & using smartphones in lectures. I told everyone to stop fighting them and think of productive and meaningful ways of teaching what I call this Y.COM GENERATION using what they like. I advised lecturers to send educative videos and tasks to be done on and using the smartphones. Those who listened, had peace earlier with the students because one way or another, academic institutions would not win the war. One thing for sure is that nobody can stop any change whose time has come, especially if it is revolutionary like a tsunami and not evolutionary!!!!
Most if not all industries have adopted AI and so these students are expected to be an AI savvy workforce upon graduation. There are excellent results that can still come under the current context if we accept, adopt, adapt and accommodate AI & the students using it. One thing for sure is that this tells us is to now always focus on teaching & assessing students on Bloom’s Taxomy’s highest order skills which include testing students on the practical application, designing, etc of information that they get on a silver platter through AI.
